five for five: vol. 3
death grips - fashion week
- surprisingly catchy, no mc ride still works
- some beats are replay worthy, others not at all
- the erratic behavior and mysterious atmosphere still reigns supreme
- i would love to hear mc ride over these beats
- it's a nice respite in their discography
score: 64
dr. dre - compton
- overblown, larger than life sound but it's not really that hype
- anderson .paak is the best thing about this album, kendrick being a close second
- dr. dress crisp production is still impressive, but needs better verses on it
- i really don't need to listen to this project in full ever again
- i might not even listen to most of these songs again
score: 62
future - 56 nights
- MARCH MADNESS
- very concise tape, this is most appreciated
- production is nice, future is locked in
- never cared about future before this tape at all
- still think he's overhyped, but he is very interesting
score: 66
future - ds2
- the deluxe version tracks should replace the mid section of this album
- once again, production is crucial to future's success
- i could've embraced more features with an album this long, drake was welcomed
- lot of good bumpin tracks, wasn't feeling most of the slow songs
- it's surprising how replayable these songs are
score: 81
b.o.b - psycadelik thoughtz
- pretentious name for a pretentious project, it's not that deep fam
- plain jane has got to be the worst rap song i've heard in a minute
- some decent tracks/ideas interspersed here and there
- very boring psych rock blends though
- glad he pushed back towards his older sound, but this is still a miss
score: 42
five for five: vol. 2
alison wonderland - run
- pretty typical edm but i like female vocals
- lyricism is far from the strong point
- the best thing about this is that it kind of slaps
- i really don't need to listen to this much anymore
- this is like jack ü b-side material
score: 59
the maine - american candy
- the "pop rock band for the girls" aesthetic done right
- i don't really identify with this at all
- if rock was actually in right now this would be top 40 material
- i could see this being people's "guilty pleasure" album
- still too pretty for my regular consumption
score: 67
all time low - future hearts
- the "pop rock band for the girls" aesthetic done meh
- i shouldn't have listened to this
- the mark hoppus feature was entirely wasted on here and that's tragic
- i wanted pop punk and got rock pop
- these are like green day - uno dos tré b-sides and that's no good
score: 22
carly rae jepsen - emotion
- i wish she'd stop being cute sometimes, like write a dirty song already
- i really like you is actually a very solid song despite its slight annoyance
- too bad taylor swift did 80s pop first because this album's better and gonna get slept on
- it's a little too long of an album though, could've easily knocked off like 5 tracks
- black heart or i didn't just come here to dance better be her next singles if she wants to pop off
score: 71
polyphia - muse
- very proficient guitar players, less proficient compositions
- these songs take so much effort to listen to because they're so solo heavy
- the chon feature has the best replay value
- the songs aren't inherently bad at all but with all the soloing it needs more low points
- the album would do better with vocals, honestly
score: 57
five for five: vol. 1
welcome to five for five.
five quick takes, five charts, five albums.
for the first volume, i've decided to embrace diversity.
chunk! no, captain chunk! - get lost find yourself
- sometimes the french accent gets in the way, sometimes it makes it unique
- the lyrical themes are simple and not in a good way
- instrumentally sound for an easycore band
- i'd rather listen to this than stuff like tigers jaw or man overboard
- there's no real reason to hate on them for what they do when they're pretty #positive about it
score: 47
ludacris - ludaversal
- he's hella funny but hella stale
- that jason aldean song didn't need to happen but it's cool that he tried
- none of the features really did anything to improve the album
- he still needed more features though
- ludacris might as well retire from albums and just do features for people
score: 55
skrillex & diplo - skrillex & diplo present jack ü
- these guys work really well together to create a great atmosphere
- there are times all over this album where i wished the beats would hit harder
- the justin bieber feature is fantastic and while i am elated to see missy back in action, her part was very straight-forward
- a lot of cheesy vocals lyrically but i don't think they're supposed to be that deep
- skrillex > diplo
score: 68
snoop dogg - bush
- pharrell is the mvp of this project, charlie wilson a very close second
- snoop really shouldn't be singing but at least he doesn't sound nearly as bad as a$ap rocky
- of course the song he raps on is the best by far
- great pacing, doesn't overstay its welcome
- i want kendrick lamar on every funk release from here on out
score: 71
veil of maya - matriarch
- the addition of clean vocals is not welcomed, but i got used to it
- it seems like they went for a more accessible sound and that's upsetting
- they're better at playing that accessible sound than most other bands, though
- the song titles all being prominent female names makes me value this project more, three-fifty being absolutely hilarious
- y'all probably don't care about the hot takes for this album or the chunk! album and for that you're lame, expand your musical palette with me
